Fallen Hero SSGT Stephen J. Goodman, United States Army” title=

SSGT Stephen J. Goodman

July 23, 1981 - October 12, 2008
U.S. Army

Stephen was the son of Michael Lynn Goodman and Kathy Briza Goodman of Mooresville, North Carolina. He was assigned to the 91st Battalion Military Police in Fort Drum, New York. During his teenage years he was a member of the Statesville Police Explorers.

On the form requesting a portrait his mother had stated these words: “My son finished his last duty for his men. He had everything they needed in Afghanistan for his men, even though he died one day before his unit left.” (Stephen was killed in a vehicle accident). She continued: “His soldiers let us know that the mission was a success. He left behind two children, three brothers, and two sisters along with his mom and dad. The General of the U.S. Army (2008) told us his death was a great loss to the U.S. Army. He and the men knew that Stephen was one of a kind. I miss him so much.”

We extend our deepest sympathy to the Goodman family……his children, Veronica and Alex; brothers, Thomas, Andrew, and Matthew; sisters, Jennifer and Christine; and his parents, Michael and Kathy. Stephen was preceded in death by a brother, Michael L. Goodman Jr., and his maternal grandfather Thomas F. Briza, who was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict.

We so appreciate Stephen’s eight years of service to our country. He evidently was an exceptional leader, a loving family member, and a devoted friend to many (including his Army buddies). He is laid to rest in Salisbury National Cemetery.

My hope is that this portrait brings peace and comfort to all who knew and loved Stephen.
